About Us

SYSA was formally established as a 501(c)(3) in 2018 to teach youth ages 12-18 about care and training of a working stockdog. It's the outgrowth of Lyle's work with 4-H & FFA members over the previous few years. Lyle has found he enjoys passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of handlers.

"I have had such a wonderful time in your program learning to train (my dog)....The dogs are becoming more and more competent and helpful on the farm."
-- Michael Appleton, current SYSA student

How It Works

  • Students are selected through an application process, including meeting with parents or guardians.
  • Upon signing a 2-year commitment to care and training, each student receives a pup from working stock.
  • Students attend regular training sessions with nationally recognized trainer Lyle East.
  • Students are responsible for regular veterinary care as well as daily care of their dog.
  • Students are responsible for providing written communication to the breeder, detailing progress of their dog.
  • The dogs are evaluated and trained on a variety of livestock depending on the interest of the dog and handler.
  • As the dogs and handlers progress, they are encouraged to enter competitive events to further enhance their skills.
  • Upon completion of the 2-year commitment, ownership of the dog is transferred to the student in a 'paper signing' ceremony.

How Can You Help?

Your tax-deductible donation will be used to:
  • purchase select pups from working stock and reputable breeders
  • sponsor students' registration fees to select training clinics
  • sponsor students' entry fees and travel expenses to competitive events
  • otherwise assist and encourage students in their growth and enjoyment of herding dog competition.
All expenditures are authorized by a 5-member board comprised of folks actively involved in herding dog competition.
